Hope

This is my favorite principle. I think of it as the happy principle because I know when I feel it I feel happy, and when I don’t I am miserable. If you are in a broken place or just discouraged by life’s buffetings, dig around inside until you can find a glimmer of hope. Nurture that glimmer until it lightens your soul and melts the hardness. Meetings hold their power largely because of this principle—meeting with others who have overcome the problems we are facing gives us hope that we can overcome them, too. So you don’t need to necessarily go to a 12 step meeting, but you do need other people who have been where you are and have overcome whatever it is that you are trying to overcome. They can encourage you and strengthen you. Just being around them can give you hope. And, quite honestly, without hope we just give up.
